September 2014 -Social Skills Are For Life

In partnership with Maitai School, Maria recently presented a series of three workshops attended by
parents, teachers, teacher aides, SENCOs, RTLBs, and specialists within the Nelson region. The workshops focussed on supporting social success for children and young people.

Workshop One entitled "Joining in with Success" focussed upon exploring the skills needed to join in with social success. Strategies and tools to support this process were outlined alongside practical examples.

Workshop Two entitled "Understanding and Communicating Feelings" looked at ways in which to support children develop understanding and awareness of the feelings of others and themselves.

Workshop Three, "Transitioning Skills", aimed at deepening the understanding of the key considerations involved when transitioning from one place to another. Participants explored environmental and sensory elements, alongside key techniques to support children´┐Żs confidence and comfort with this process.

Here are some comments from attendees ...

Thank you so much for your wise, insightful and practical workshops, based on so much experience and perceptive observation of how our young people think, feel, communicate and learn. Your audiences have taken away valuable new skills and richer understanding. Principal, Nelson

Putting the supportive aspects of transitioning skills under the microscope reinforced the holistic, essential necessity to develop them in tandem. ECE Educator

I loved all of it; I especially liked the way you reference to practical ideas, and also revise so that it reinforces the learning. Workshop participant

A great mix of practical examples and theory. Workshop participant

I spoke about your workshops yesterday with two different lots of people...all super positive.
A great big THANKYOU for running them...We all need updating and it was so good to have such practical workshops...things that are useful at work and at home. My one regret...my two daughters ( as Mums, not teachers) missing it!!! I can honestly say I have been thinking and doing a lot of what you said, both at school with our students and while on Skype with grandchildren....and it really really works.
Thanks heaps Maria
